Thanksgiving is a big movie weekend.  Harry Potter and Megamind should do well.  In fact, I’m not sure that Disney’s Tangled (the Rapunzel story) is going to come out on top.  Don’t worry, Disney, you still have Tron:Legacy coming this year.

Black Friday TV Marathons

The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday in the retail biz, is also a day for TV marathons.  That may be less important now that you can do your own marathons whenever you want (with streaming Netflix for one thing), but it’s still a way to spend the day with a show you’d never watch otherwise.  😉  Just kidding…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

They probably call this Harry Potter and the Blockbuster Weekend.  😉  Yes, they would have made more money if they had been able to do 3D that satisfied them (they released without 3D instead).  I think releasing the e-books first could have helped.  I know that may seem odd, but it’s been more than three years since the book on which this is based was released.  That may not seem like much, but that’s a long time in kid time.  I think the HP books are true classics and will be popular for many decades (like the Oz books).  But kids may not be begging their parents to take them like they might have two years ago.  On the other hand, this is the most adult of the series…there are probably people in line as I write this.  I think we can look for a dogro (domestic growth) north of 100 million…and it will be relatively more successful in the UK.

The Week Ahead: September 13 – September 19 2010

Monday, September 13

On TV: NatGeo gives us a special on the death of the megabeasts…after the dinosaurs, there were still big animals…and then, largely, they went away; the Cartoon Network gives us new eps of Johnny Test, Adventure Time, the Regular Show, and Mad; Lie to Me wraps it’s second season on Fox; Scream Queens continues on VH1

Tuesday, September 14

On TV: there’s a new Unnatural History on Cartoon Network; Syfy has a new Warehouse 13; the post-apocalypse reality show, the Colony, continues on the Discovery Channel

Wednesday, September 15

On TV: Master Chef finishes on Fox, and Big Brother finished on CBS; Survivor starts its 21st (!) season on CBS, with teams divided by age;  Syfy’s got a new Ghost Hunters; there’s a new Sci-Fi Science on the Science Channel; Top Chef has its finale…and Top Chef Desserts has its series debut

Thursday, September 16

Cons* starting today include:

On TV: the History Channel has a new ep of The Universe; Vampire Diaries writes another entry on the CW; Destination Truth goes after a Canadian lake monster (there are several choices, actually)…and goes to Angkor Wat; Nikita continues on the CW; Syfy has a new Beast Legends; Stan Lee’s Superhumans has a new ep on the History Channel; Syfy also has a new WCG Ultimate Gamer

Friday, September 17

At the movie theatres: Never Let Me Go might seem like a good box office bet…based on a novel by an acclaimed author, featuring Keira Knightley, who has starred in some of the biggest money-makers of all time…but I think this is solidly art house.  It’s R rated, which hasn’t been good at the box office.  That’s for sexual content and nudity, not violence (like The Expendables, which has done well).  Yes, there is the curiousity factor, with the next Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) being another one of  the stars…along with Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Carey Mulligan.  Still, I’m going to go with under $40 million domestic gross (dogro) on this one…but a lot per house.   I think the Devil is going to have a H*ll of a time doing much at the box office.  I’m always happy to be proved wrong on something like that…I like it when movies are good and do well.  The commercials just don’t look interesting, though.  The only big name is M. Night Shyamalan…and he did the story (not the screenplay) and is a producer.  As I say, I’d love to see a success…but I have serious doubts.  Some audience that may have had will choose The Last Exorcism instead.  My prediction: under $40m.  Alpha and Omega…I certainly overestimated the audience for Cats and Dogs, and I think it would be a mistake to go too high on this one.  The stars skew the wrong age on this…you need the stars to appeal to the parents who will take the kids, and I’m not sure Justin Long and Drew Barrymore are the people to do that.  The studio is inexperienced in marketing animated movies.  The funniest speculation that I’ve seen about this is that it is Furry recruitment…if you don’t know what that suggests, that’s probably just as well.  Suffice it to say, I doubt that was the point.  There are other new movies (more mainstream and art house) that will probably take the weekend from these…and holdovers may do well.

Horror Realm is a Con* starting today in Pittsburg.  They are doing some cool reunions: Basket Case, Night of the Living Dead, and Dawn of the Dead

On TV: the Cartoon Network brings us a new Batman: The Brave and the Bold (the first of a two-parter, featuring Starro, evil Lantern Corps members…and B’wana Beast!); the Cartoon Network also has the series debut of Sym-Bionic Titan; oh, and they have a new Generator X, too; the Travel Channel brings us the 3rd season debut of Ghost Adventures;  it’s a special one-hour 3rd season debut of Star Wars: the Clone Wars on Cartoon Network; Syfy has a new Haven

Saturday, September 18

On TV: NatGeo has a showcase of the Prism Awards…and a special based on Jared Diamond’s book, Collapse; Nickelodeon debuts Fred: the Movie (based on Lucas Cruikshank’s Fred Figglehorn character from YouTube;  it’s the BBC America 2nd season finale of Being Human; where are Marilyn Manson, Connie Stevens, Laurie Prepon, and Haylie Duff on the same show?  Bio’s Celebrity Ghost Stories; Lauren Lawrence analyzes celebrities’ nightmares on Celebrity Nightmares Decoded

Sunday, September 19

On TV: Can’t let Boardwalk Empire go without a mention…Steve Buscemi, TV star…with Martin Scorcese directing the first ep (HBO); ABC has two new eps of The Gates, including the 1st season finale; The series debut of Real and Chance – The Legend Hunters  brings cryptozoology to VH1; Rubicon continues on AMC; Cartoon Network has a new ep of the Venture Brothers

There’s a one day Toy Con* in Bridgeview, Illinois

*Cons are short for “conventions”, when people who rarely leave the house get together…just kidding, of course, they can be great fun.  For details, I recommend Fanboy’s Convention List.
