Oscar noms and a new season of Archer…looks like a good week!¬† ūüôā

Movies

The Rite

This one is a bit of a tough call for me.¬† The Last Exorcism, released last year, barely broke $40 million domestic gross (dogro).¬† The director, Mikael H√•fstr√∂m, also directed 1408 (which dogroed¬†about 70 mil in 2007).¬† This one also has an interesting cast: Anthony Hopkins, Alice Braga, Toby Jones…and Rutger Hauer.¬† I haven’t seen a lot of publicity on it.¬† I’m going to say…in the 40 million to 79 million dollar final dogro range…maybe 60 million.¬† I could also see it sinking badly, and maybe getting closer to 100.¬† But I’ll stick with the 40m to 79m slot.

Movies

The Green Hornet

Unless you’ve been living under a rock…or, you know, watching football or whatever it is you non-geeks do, ūüėČ you know about this adaptation of the radio/TV show.

For an undercover superhero, the advertising campaign has really been in your face.¬† ūüôā¬† It had bad “buzz” in the beginning (ironic for a hornet), but it’s gotten better.

On the TV series, Kato was the more interesting character…but only because Bruce Lee played him.¬† ūüôā¬† It was an attempt to do another campy Batman, but they did try to make it more serious.

In this movie, it looks like Kato is much more of the decision maker than Britt Reid (played in this case by Seth Rogen).

One thing you probably won’t hear in this movie?¬† Britt Reid is the grand-nephew of the Lone Ranger.¬† ūüôā

My guess is this is going to not do all that well, but not horribly.¬† I doubt it will make the advertising budget back this weekend.¬† I’m going to say it opens decently, but ends up…under 100m dogro¬†(domestic gross).¬† I think we might be looking around 60 or 70 in the end, although that feels like I’m being pessimistic.¬†

Season of the Witch

It‚Äôs been several seasons since this Nicolas Cage-starrer was ready for release.¬† That‚Äôs not a good sign.¬† The trailers make is an ‚Äúis she or isn‚Äôt she‚ÄĚ with a 14th¬†Century girl accused of being a witch.¬† It‚Äôs got some interesting people in it besides Cage: Ron Perlman; Christopher Lee; and Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire‚Äôs Capone).¬† The director, Dominic Sena, worked successfully with Cage on Gone in Sixty Seconds.¬† Still, I‚Äôd be surprised to see this get to $40 million dogro (domestic gross).

The Year Ahead: 2011

December 31, 2010

The Year Ahead: 2011

This is a special look ahead at some of the geeky highlights we expect in 2011.  For more details (and to have the events in chronological order), see our ever-growing Measured Circle Pop Culture Timeline.

Movies

We’ve written before about how this may be the geekiest movie year ever.

There are sequels, what we call “sidequels” (movies in an existing universe, but not necessarily with the same characters or plot), remakes, and originals.

While Cars 2, the final Harry Potter, and Pirates 4¬†seem inevitable successes, there are others that are others that might be more of a surprise…and still reap big rewards.¬† Here are five:

Sucker Punch

Just like its name, this one may sneak up on a lot of people and knock them out.¬† Zack Snyder directs…and the trailers are getting a lot of buzz.¬† It’s not fronted by stars, although there are certainly some well-known names.¬† It’s going to be visually stunning.

Cowboys & Aliens

A straight-ahead concept, marquee stars, and a big money director.¬† If this flops, its in Ishtar territory…and I’m not expecting it to flop.

H.R. Pufnstuf

This is based on the beloved (and trippy…there’s no better word) TV series.¬†¬† Almost nothing is coming out about it.¬† That may mean it’s stalled…or that they are really going to spring something on us.¬† I could see this doing really well…if audiences have the taste of Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost out of their mouths by now.¬† ūüėČ

Rise of the Apes

As someone who watched all five Planet of the Apes movies in a row…in a movie theatre…in an apesuit, I may be a tad prejudiced.¬† ūüėȬ† However, this one stars James Franco (and features John Lithgow), and is a prequel.¬† I can’t deny it, it’s one of the ones I’m really looking forward to seeing.¬† Franco could possibly win an Oscar (he’s definitely hosting) and follow it up with a PotA movie…so cool!

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

Stephen Moffat is one of the most interesting geek screenwriters¬†out there…Jekyll, Doctor Who, Sherlock.¬† Edgar Wright brought us Spaced (a great series), Shaun of the Dead, and Scott Pilgrim.¬† Tintin is a huge cultural presence in Europe…and oh yeah, it’s directed by Steven Spielberg.

TV

The Cape

This looks like a pretty straight up superhero show, which may be what people want.  If The Green Hornet disappoints, that might considerably up this.

Falling Skies and Terra Nova

TV series and Steven Spielberg?¬† That doesn’t always work out well…Amazing Stories (I know, some of you liked it), Earth 2 (although I thought Tim Curry deserved an Emmy nom), SeaQuest 2032?¬† On the other hand, there was that Taken miniseries.¬† These will undoubtedly look expensive…

Being Human (the American version)

A vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost share a flat…um, apartment.¬† No, that isn’t the opening line for a joke…it’s the premise for a British series being adapted by Syfy.¬† It might sound silly, but the British version was more serious than the idea might suggest.

Torchwood

New episodes of Torchwood!  The return of Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper!

Archer

I think this was the best new series of 2010…despite all the praise heaped on The Walking Dead.¬† It’s a racy, witty, animated spy spoof.

Miscellaneous geekiness

Watson the supercomputer competes on Jeopardy…if software can really understand all the subtle wordplay in those questions, it will be very impressive.

Comic-Con 2011…this is the¬†con (convention)¬†that gets the most coverage…starts July 21 (with previews on the 20th).¬† It’s the buzz maker.

Rage is a videogame¬†from the folks who brought you Doom and Quake…and the first one in a long time.¬† Other videogames include: Star Wars: Old Republic (maybe); and The Sims Medieval.¬†

I’ve only barely scratched the surface with this..what 2011 movies, TV shows, games, and so on are you most anticipating?

Movies

Gulliver’s Travels

This was aimed at the kids, and Jack Black is popular with that market segment.¬† It’s got quite a cast beyond that: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, Catherine Tate, Billy Connolly, to name a few.¬† Director Rob Letterman has brought us a couple of strong-performing animated features before, Monsters vs Aliens and Shark Tale.¬† The screenwriters, Joe Stillman and Nicholas Stoller, both have good credits on their resumes.¬† The buzz is not particularly good, but they can cry all the way to the bank (to quote Liberace) on this one.¬† I’m not saying it’s going to be even a $40 million dogro (domestic gross) opening, but it will continue to make money forever.

The Illusionist

Definitely an art house movie (no $40m for this one), but it is likely to get an Oscar nom (if it’s qualified properly).¬† It’s an animated feature from the maker of the Triplets of Belleville (Sylvain Chomet), adapted from a Jacques Tati screenplay.

Other less geeky movies this week include: Little Fockers (Ben Stiller), True Grit (Jeff Bridges), and Country Strong (Gwyneth Paltrow).

TRON: Legacy

This is a super-buzzy sequel, although I just haven’t gotten psyched about it.¬† I think it helps if you never saw the original or don’t remember it…Disney may have been wise not to put the original out again on video before this release.¬† That’s not to say that people don’t like the original, or that it wasn’t worthwhile.¬† However, it didn’t do that well at the box office, and I think it’s more attractive as an idea (“the first videogame movie”) than a reality.¬† I do think it will have a huge opening…I could see it hitting 75m dogro (domestic gross).¬†¬† Maintaining it, though?¬†

Movies

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

This is the third movie in the current series (there have been some other adaptations along the way), but the first at this studio (Fox)¬†and the first with this director (Michael Apted).¬† The first movie grossed close to $300 million in the US: the second one, I think, was about half the first.¬† This should do pretty well (and relatively better than the US) with Winter Break happening for many school kids.¬† It does have competition (Harry Potter, Tangled, Megamind…), but HP may be too dark and some adults just don’t like cartoons.¬† I’d see this on the order of a $50m opening weekend, and to end up with a dogro (domestic gross) of…over 100, less than 150.

The Tourist

Spy fi with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.¬† A lot of this is going to depend on the chemistry between the stars, and I just don’t know.¬† I don’t think I’ve seen a publicity picture where they seem to be looking at each other.¬† That may be a desire to show us both of their faces, but that’s going to be a temptation in the movie as well…to feature their celebrity more than their roles.¬† I suspect that this may underperform expectations.¬† I’m going to guess it’s beaten by Narnia…maybe a 30m opening?¬† Under 80 total?¬† It will do okay on video…

The Tempest

And over here in the art house, we have Julie Taymor’s version of the Shakespeare play.¬† Helen Mirren plays Prospero.¬† While there could be Oscar consideration for this, I have a hard time seeing it get to 40m dogro.

Movies

The Black Swan (limited release)

Starring Natalie Portman (and featuring Mila Kunis) and directed by Darren Aronofsky, this one will clearly be striking.¬† It should be Oscar-bait…but will it be widely popular?¬† I think it’s more of an arthouse type hit.¬† There will be people who think it is their favorite movie of all time, but I’d be surprised for it to get to 80 million…might make 40, though.

The Warrior’s Way

This may be a bigger movie than it looks.¬† I mean that in terms of production…yes, the star, Dong-gun Jung is not well-known in the US.¬† This is the first US credit for the director/writer Sngmoo Lee.¬† However, it also features Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush.¬† IMDB estimates the budget at 45 mil, which is substantial.¬† No question, it’s a martial arts picture…a “warrior-assassin” refuses a mission and hides out in the “Ameerican badlands”.¬† Somehow, I don’t think it is going to feel like the David Carradine Kung Fu, though…I’m not thinking that much philosophy.¬† I don’t expect a big opening…seems like an odd week for it.¬† I’d see it ending up…around thirty to sixty US dogro (domestic gross).
