MYOM (Make Your Own Marathon)

In a MYOM, you stream the movies/episodes from an online source or perhaps download them ahead of time. I’m going to make some suggestions for marathons you might want put together.

Classic Halloween: Universal Horror

While arguably starting with the silent 1923 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (with Lon Chaney), the Universal Horror cycle was clearly established with the 1931 adaptations of Dracula (with Bela Lugosi), and Frankenstein (with Boris Karloff). Sequels to these would continue into 1948, when Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein put them to rest (although like all good/bad monsters, they would be back).

Here’s a suggested order. I am by no means including all of the movies, but hitting what I consider the highlights. I’m also going to cheat and include one movie from 1954. The odds are good that you’ll see some of these costumes on Halloween:

  • Dracula (1931)
  • Frankenstein (1931)
  • The Mummy (1932)
  • The Invisible Man (1933)
  • Bride of Frankenstein (1935)…don’t miss this one, it’s a great sequel
  • The Wolf Man (1941)
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
  • Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

This will take you through a day of watching, and give you the real classics. I jumped ahead for Creature from the Black Lagoon, but I am ending it with Abbott & Costello, so you can have some laughs at the end of the marathon. These are scary, but could be watched by older children.

Supernatural: The Series

Yes, this is a current TV series, but there have been more than 150 episodes. If you start at the beginning, you’ll definitely get some scares: the mythology doesn’t really develop  so much in the series until later. Stick with it, and you may become hooked. I’ve watched it one episode after the other, and I will say you may find it formulaic in the first season. This series can be quite scary (although it’s also funny)…I wouldn’t go below pre-teens.

Hammer Horror

Towards the end of the 1950s, Hammer in England revived the classic horror monsters…but with more sex and violence. That doesn’t mean they aren’t also atmospheric, and perceived as, well, cool.

  • The Curse of Frankenstein (1957): this really started the cycle. It’s in colour, and stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and was a big hit
  • Horror of Dracula (1958)
  • The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958)
  • The Mummy (1959)
  • The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
  • The Reptile (1966)
  • Dracula has Risen from the Grave (1968)
  • Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971)
  • Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter (1974)

Be prepared on these…not for kids. There are so many more options from Hammer, but this is a pretty good sampling.

The Addams Family: The Original Series

Definitely Halloween, certainly okay for kids, well-written….and arguably the most loving parents on TV ever. I’d start right at the beginning, and just keep rolling.

The Uniques

These movies stand-alone, and may be edgy. You won’t forget them…and may wish you could “un-see” them. 🙂 Some are also in the public domain: check Archive.org

  • The Asphyx:.. I’ll start you out with an easy one
  • Spider Baby
  • Night of the Living Dead
  • The Killer Shrews
  • Horror Express
  • Freaks
  • Plan 9 from Outer Space
  • The Island of Lost Souls
  • Fiend without a Face
  • Carnival of Souls

After that list, I hope you can sleep that night!

Wow, I could do this all day. 🙂 I feel bad for not including some things, but feel free to make your own suggestions.

Flixtream this! Special Halloween 2010 edition

October 31, 2010

Flixtream this! Special Halloween 2010 edition

You can get streaming Netflix in a lot of different ways: directly on a computer, through a Roku device, through a gaming system (Wii, XBOX 360, PS3), even through some TVs.  You can watch all the streaming stuff you want (and get 1 DVD at a time) for $8.99 a month.  I’m going to start recommending some things for you to watch…I call it Flixtreaming (for “NetFlix Streaming”).

Halloween and scary movies…for me, they go together “boo-tifully”.  😉  A lot of the classic costumes are based on those movies: the flat-headed Frankenstein’s monster (Jack Pierce’s brilliant design for Boris Karloff); the evening-dressed Dracula (Bela Lugosi); and the hairy-faced wolfman (Jack Pierce again, for Lon Chaney, Jr.).

Other people extend beyond the Universal horror movies…Freddie Kreuger from A Nightmare on Elm Street; the shuffling zombies from Night of the Living Dead; and the sexy vamp Elvira.  Yes, TV can count, too.  🙂

Whether it’s keeping the kids entertained waiting for trick-or-treat time, or a party for adults, streaming Netflix makes it easy to get in the Halloween mood.  I’m going to make some suggestions…be careful, not all of them are good for all audiences.

Dracula (1931)

This is the classic, the one that issued in the whole Universal horror cycle.  Bela Lugosi, who had starred in the stage hit, stars as Count Dracula…and yes, the action starts out in Transylvania.  Great lines (“I never drink…wine.”) and Dwight Frye as the maniac Renfield make this the must-see.  Is it hokey?  Sure…and what is that armadillo doing in a European castle?  Still, I would definitely put this on the list.

Frankenstein (1931)

Boris Karloff is brilliant in the largely non-verbal role of Frankenstein’s creation.  While he later would be associated with the role of the mad scientist, that honor belongs to Colin Clive in this James Whale-directed classic (he also directed Dracula, above).  Ken Strickfaden’s electrical work for Dr. Frankenstein’s lab has been imitated many times.

The Addams Family (1964…)

If you want one that will entertain the kids and adults alike, I’d recommend a marathon of the 1960s sitcom.   While “mysterious and spooky” to the outside world, this is actually a loving family.  While somewhat dated in its plots, its outsider mentality fits right into today.  If it had been a musical (well, it is now, but that’s not the same thing), it would have been great for Glee.

Dark Shadows (1967…)

Prefer your vampires and werewolves as romantic leads?  Consider revisiting this 1960s soap opera with Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins and David Selby as the werewolf Quentin.  Just like with the Addams Family, there are enough episodes for you to watch all day.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Not for kids!  It’s really the writing that makes this terrifying…although there is gore.  If you’ve never seen it, I’m not going to spoil anything.  Just be prepared for a difficult night’s sleep afterwards…if you sleep at all.

The Exorcist (1973)

This story of a possessed girl (Linda Blair) scared people in a way that movies really hadn’t done before.  Based on the best-selliing William Peter Blatty book (itself inspired by an actual event) this can be really disturbing, in ways beyond a quick scare.  Again, definitely not for kids.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Not for kids for a different reason.  🙂  This one may certainly be best in a group with a party atmosphere.  It’s a musical tribute to the Universal horror movies…but with a definite twist.  If you’ve ever seen this one, let me say…it’s a lot better on the second viewing.  Why?  There is a lot of foreshadowing.  Tim Curry deserved an Oscar nomination for this one…although that wasn’t going to happen.  🙂

Paranormal Activity (2009 wide release)

With the sequel in the theatres, this is a great opportunity to see the original.  It’s one of the most profitable movies of all time…but don’t think that means it looks cheap.  I was pleasantly surprised by it.  The strength is in Oren Pell’s directing and writing and Katie Featherston’s naturalistic performance.  It’s really creepy…very intense.

There are a few suggestions for you.  🙂  I could list a hundred more, but I’ll leave it up to you.  What movies and TV shows (available on streaming Netflix) do you recommend for Halloween?

ABC Family’s traditional 13 nights of Halloween starts tonight.  The featured event?  Goonies at 8:30.  Is that really Halloween fare?

Halloween TV: October 18 2010

The decorations have been in some stores since August, but this week starts the two weeks of Halloween on TV.  Watch them now or DVR them for Halloween night.

AMC starts their Fear Fest, which runs through Halloween.  They kick off with the first two Friday the 13th movies and go non-stop until their new zombie series (The Walking Dead) on Halloween night.  I’m not a big fan of the channel, because I don’t like my movies cut up by commercials.  Fortunately, they also have full movies online at

http://www.amctv.com/videos/fearfest/

I recommend The Last Man on Earth, a low-budget but well-written version of I Am Legend with Vincent Price.  Fiend without a Face is a weird one…disembodied brains (with the spinal columns) attack!  For a grade-z classic, try The Horror of Party Beach.

Cartoon Network has Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktacular at 5:30.

The Disney Channel has Mostly Ghostly, based on an R.L. Stine (Goosebumps) book.  Also, earlier at 6:30, Shaq hosts a So Random Christmas Special on Sonny with a Chance.

HGTV has Halloween Block Party at 8:00 PM.

A la carte suggestion: watching The Addams Family TV show on streaming Netflix.

Shopping the World Wide Halloweb

October 9, 2010

Shopping the World Wide Halloweb

My first real job was working in a place that sold, along with novelties and magic tricks, masks and costumes.

As you can imagine, we were busy at Halloween…very busy.  The last few days before, we’d have a lineup as long as 300 people waiting to get into the store.  We’d let people in ten at a time, and they got five minutes to shop (with our help, of course).

Fortunately, you don’t have to do that now.  You can relax on your couch and have a wider selection of choices than we could ever have had for you.

I’m going to give you some links here…have fun!

Spirit Halloween

You know those Halloween stores that just pop up shortly before Halloween?  You can sip the trip and order from the company on-line.  It’s a very professional site, with 925 men’s costumes and 1294 women’s costumes.  They have costumes for kids, babies, groups…even pets.  They have wigs, masks, decorations (including animatronic figures up to almost $500), and more.  Shipping is $4.99 for orders over $65.

UPDATE: these are more coupon codes for orders from Spirit.  I don’t know how long they last.

  • $10 off $75 GET10
  • $15 off $100 GET15
  • $30 off $150 GET30

BuyCostumes.com

How about a 110% price guarantee?  Yep, if you buy a costume here, and then send them qualifying evidence that somebody else has it cheaper (and there are specific restrictions…no auction sites like eBay, has to be new), they give you a refund.  2235 women’s costumes, 1881 men’s costumes…and they claim to be “the web’s most popular costume store”.  They have hundreds of clearance costumes…and there’s a special coupon code (extra20) good through Monday, October 11 for an extra 20% off.  There are good adult costumes for under ten dollars!  Even though it’s called BuyCostumes, they do decorations as well.  They have free economy shipping and $1 faster shipping…but again, with a coupon code, and again, only through Monday, October 11th.  The coupon code is FREE50.

DeepDiscount.com

You may know DeepDiscount for their great DVD deals with free shipping (if you don’t, you should).  Well, they do books, music, videogames…even fragrances.  They also have a Halloween section!  Over 1100 women’s costumes, and over 1000 men’s costumes, gives them a nice selection.  You can order by October 20th for Halloween delivery.  They also have a coupon code (BOO5) for 32% off…and that’s on top of discounts they already offer.  They have decorations (including those big inflatables)…and with free shipping!  They also have a wish list feature, which is nice if somebody else might buy it for you.  It’s a good site year round, and I’ve been happy with their service in the past.

PartyCity.com

This is a year-round party shop, but they really push Halloween.  They say, “Nobody has more costumes for less.”  They have a limited time coupon (PCSCARY50) for free shipping on orders that include a costume and are over $50.  They have party supplies, too…that can be a good mix.  The site is fancy: they have a survey to help you pick a costume and an interactive game.  Oh, and they can analyze your FaceBook profile to make a suggestion!

Oriental Trading Company

Yes, they do costumes and decorations, but they also do candy and very inexpensive toys.  Some people like to give little toys instead of or in addition to candy to trick or treaters, and this is a great place to get those items.  You can get 250 toys for $29.99.  Not going to have that many visitors?  $8 gets you 24 toy-filled plastic Jack-O-Lanterns.  They also have a feature where you can upload your picture and they make a Halloween video you can share…sort of like Jib-Jab.com, which is doing free Halloween e-cards with your face.

Here are a few more…
