Ion Hobana reported dead

Ion Hobana was one of Romania’s leading science fiction writers, but I associate him more with the mid-1970s book, UFO’s from Behind the Iron Curtain.

In the 1970s, we thought that the Soviet Union might be doing significant research on UFOs and paranormal topics.  It was possible they were ahead of us in this, and that was a concern.  I remember reading this…it seemed to show that UFOs were being reported in Russia and other Soviet bloc countries…but I also remember thinking that they weren’t reported in the same way.

Did that mean the reports were strictly cultural artefacts, or was it simply the different perspectives on a real phenomenon?

Hobana’s short science fiction story Night Broadcast appeared in English in The Penguin World Omnibus of Science Fiction, and A Kind of Space appeared in English in Twenty Houses of the Zodiac.

      Thanks for writing, ovni!

It’s too bad many people will encounter him the first time through his passing, but he is worth reading.
