Movies

I Am Number Four

While The Green Hornet has done better than I predicted, I think I Am Number Four might be the first 2011 movie to break $100 million.   The director (D.J. Caruso) did the youth buzzy Disturbia, and the more-than-100m dogroing (domestic gross earning) Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeouf.  He also directed an episode of Smallville…that matters because the screenwriters of this movie include Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Executive Producers of that series).  The novel was cowritten by controversial writer James Frey (A Million Little Pieces).   The stars include Dianna Agron (Glee’s Quinn), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), and Alex Pettyfer (who will star opposite Vanessa Hudgens in Beastly later this year).  I think we are looking between 1 and 2mill dogro eventually.  Part of that will depend on whether it also attracts older viewers…that may prevent it from matching last year’s Karate Kid remake at $177m.

Unknown

I wasn’t a big fan of Taken…I still think of Liam Neeson as an actor playing the role of an action stat.  Still, it dogroed $145m.  While this new movie should attract some of the same audience, I’m not sure it will hit the same zeitgeist moment.  Is being replaced by someone else really that big a fear for the young people who are the easiest path to blockbusterdom?  It seems more like something that would concern older folks.  Still, January Jones will get some people into the theatre…as will Frank Langella.  Co-star Diane Kruger takes a step forward on this one…success here would lead to more leading roles.  I don’t want to underestimate this one, but I don’t feel like it will have legs.  I’m going to say high 60s to low 80s.  Since I try to pick one of my slots…I guess I’ll have to go with the 40 to 79 slot, but I do think it could crack 80.  You know what?  Let’s go with the 80 to 99 mil slot…live a little. 🙂

Also interesting this week are two limited openings: Vanishing on 7th Street (opening only in New York) and I Am (Portland, Oregon).
