Gnomeo & Juliet

Romeo and Juliet…with garden gnomes.  Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2) directs this Disney effort.  The voice cast (one of the selling points of an animated movie) is interesting.  James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland’s Dr. Garrigan, Dr. Xavier in this year’s X-Men: First Class) and Emily Blunt (The Wolfman, this year’s The Adjustment Bureau) voice the young lovers.  Other geek-friendly names include Jim Cummings, Maggie Smith, Ozzie Osbourne, Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart (as “Bill Shakespeare”), and Hulk Hogan.  I’m not high on this one’s chances: the animation just hasn’t looked like it stands out.  I think there is also brand confusion for young children with the Travelocity gnome (which they are likely to know better than actually seeing one in a garden, in my opinion).  Also, nine screenwriters (plus a writing credit for Shakespeare) worries me.  However, the next animated movie isn’t until March 4th…and that’s the not-necessarily-as-kid-friendly PG-rated Rango (with Johnny Depp).  The lowest-earning wide release animated features last year still made 25.1m (Alpha & Omega) and Legends of the Guardians (55.7m).  Alpha & Omega had big names in it, too.  I think it will do better than that…the Disney will help, and Asbury has impressive credits.  I’m going to go with…ending up with a dogro (domestic gross) in that 70m range (between 40 and 80, and on the high end of that).

The Eagle

While McAvoy opens as Gnomeo, his The Last King of Scotland director Kevin McDonald opens The Eagle.  He re-teams with screenwriter Jeremy Brock, again of The Last King of Scotland.

That 2006 movie, even buoyed by a Best Actor Oscar win, didn’t break 20m dogro.  I would think this will do better than that, with Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland…and a “sexier” premise.  I’m still not confident of it breaking 40m dogro, although it will probably do better relatively in the UK.  Oh, it’s about ancient Romans in Scotland, by the way.

Cons are short for “conventions”, when people who rarely leave the house get together…just kidding, of course, they can be great fun.  For details, I recommend Fanboy’s Convention List.
