Flash! Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman

Flash! Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman

Ah, Catwoman!  The purr-fect Batvillain!

For me, Catwoman is Julie Newmar…she was shockingly self-assured, cruel, and capricious.

However, many actors have played Catwoman…more than you can name, most likely.

Now, news comes that Anne Hathaway will play her in The Dark Knight Rises, the next Christopher Nolan Batman movie (due on July 20, 2012).  Let’s see…Hathaway has played Agent 99, now Catwoman…do you think there’s been enough time for another movie with Emma Peel? 😉

It was also announced that Tom Hardy (Inception) will play Bane.  Who is Bane?  He’s a very intelligent (he figures out Batman’s secret identity quite quickly), chemically-enhanced ex-con.  In the comics, he is one of Batman’s greatest foes (even if relatively recent, compared to Catwoman).

I wasn’t crazy about Batman Begins…and I thought the Dark Knight was a great movie.  Heath Ledger’s Joker was a brilliant interpretation…he was a nihilist who thought the world was a bad place, wanted to be proved wrong…and didn’t expect to be.

I think Hathaway and Hardy are both interesting actors…but this casting doesn’t make me say, “Wow.”  I’m quite open to seeing what happens, but The Dark Knight is quite an act to follow.  I deliberately didn’t say “top”, but just being “the one after” is hard.

Some Catwoman actors:

  • Julie Newmar (Adam West TV series)
  • Lee Meriwether (Adam West movie)
  • Eartha Kitt (Adam West TV series, following Newmar)
  • Melendy Britt (she’s also voiced Batgirl…and was She-Ra)
  • Michelle Pfeiffer (for Tim Burton)
  • Adrienne Barbeau (voice only)
  • Halle Berry (the Catwoman movie)
  • Gina Gershon (voice only)
