The Measured Circle’s 2010 Box Office MVPs

The Measured Circle’s 2010 Box Office MVPs

As 2010 draws to a close (although there are still some big movies to open), we can start looking at the box office results.  You can see which movies are doing what on our

40, 80, 1, 2, 3

page.

However, this post is going to look at which actors were the Most Valuable Players in 2010.

We’re only going to look at movies that had a dogro (domestic gross in the US) of at least $40 million, and to be on this list, you have to have been in at least two of those.  So, Daniel Radcliffe doesn’t qualify, because he only had the one movie (and that Simpsons ep, but we aren’t counting TV).  The other price of admission for consideration?  You have to be first billed in a movie that made $100 million dogro.

While some of these movies are still making money, we’re going to go with the numbers at the time of writing.  We’ll take the dogro and average it, even though it’s impressive when you have more than two.  Voice roles do count…it’s often the name on the poster that brings people to those movies.

Who are The Measured Circle’s Box Office Most Valuable Players for 2010?

#1, #2, #3 (tie) Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, and Timothy Spall all appeared in both Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland…giving them an average dogro of $300m.

#4 Michael Keaton, thanks to voicing Ken in Toy Story 3 and appearing in The Other Guys, is fourth with $267m…didn’t pick him, did you? 🙂

#5 Anne Hathaway, $222m (Alice in Wonderland, Valentine’s Day…Love and Other Drugs isn’t counted, because it hasn’t dogroed $40m)

#6 Jackson Rathbone, $216.5m (Eclipse and Airbender…ask your kids)

#7 Samuel L. Jackson, 215.5m (Iron Man 2, The Other Guys…he probably is always up there as an MVP)

#8 Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter and Clash of the Titans)

#9 Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island, Inception…if we only counted lead roles, he’d be higher)

#10 Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2, The Expendables)

The complete list is below.  One special award to the highest ranked former or current The Daily Show castmember: Kristen Schaal (beating out Rob Riggle and Steve Carrell).  Her combined box office dogro is by far the highest overall, with a total of $896.9!  That’s $300m more than her closest competitor.  She had five movies that dogroed $40m or more in 2010…and her average still has her in the top twenty!  That’s reliability!  Need to boost your box office?  Consider giving Kristen a walk-on…hey, even a line couldn’t hurt. 😉

If there’s enough interest, we’ll update this after the end of the year.  If we do, it’s very likely that Jeff Bridges will get on this list, after the release of TRON and True Grit, and Yogi Bear may push Justin Timberlake on to the list as well.

UPDATE: This has changed somewhat after the release of TRON, as we predicted.  No shifts in the top ten rankings: Narnia made it to $40m, and TRON:Legacy is over $40 as well.  Unstoppable, Tangled, and Harry Potter all made gains since we posted last.  As a result of that, Michael Sheen and Cillian Murphy were added to the list.

This first list is just the actor, the combined dogros of their movies that made at least $40m, and the average:

I do have a favor to ask. If you liked this post and are a member of IMDb, please consider posting it (if it hasn’t been done yet) for consideration in their Hit List:

I’d really be honored if it showed up there, and I don’t feel it’s appropriate to post it myself.
