Flash! 3 Stooges movie gets the last nyuk: back on
Leonard Maltin once said something like, “The world is divided into two types of people: those who like the 3 Stooges, and those who wonder why.”
I’m in the first camp…but I understand the second. In fact, I use it as a key example when I explain humor to trainers…what works, what helps, and why.
There has been a long gestating Stooges movie, with all kinds of interesting people involved with it. At one point, it looked like Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro would play Moe, Larry, and Curly. Well, not too long ago, Jim Carrey indicated the movie was dead.
“Oh, a wise guy!”
Well, the news is that the movie has moved to Fox, and is back on:
The Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary) are still involved, but we could have a whole new trio of stars.
That’s always been a question for me…do you want stars? Sean Penn is inspired casting as Larry, no question. There is a sad zen quality to the porcupine-headed “third stooge”, and it’s not going to be easy to find somebody who can pull that off. There could be a tendency to make him a cipher, non-reactive, and that’s not really the thing of his essential Larryness.
Curly, of course, is a very physical part, but there’s a lot more to it than that. He was a great dancer (before he became Curly, his nickname was “Babe”, because he was popular with the girls). There is also that childlike quality…yes, including tantrums. But Curly is also known for his dialogue.
Moe was the leader in real life, but I don’t think he’s as difficult to cast.
This is not a biopic, and that means the stars have to actually be funny. :) I do think it can be done, but it’s going to depend on writing and inspired casting.
