Dino De Laurentiis reported dead
Dino De Laurentiis was known for giant, fantasy spectacles like King Kong (1976), Flash Gordon (1980) , and Conan the Destroyer (1984).
He took big chances, and they didn’t always pay off. The fans didn’t always praise him. One of the geekiest protest signs ever was “Dino De Laurentiis is non compos mentis”. You don’t see a lot of protest signs half in Latin. 😉 This one was for his apparent decision not to use animation for the giant ape in his King Kong remake.
However, even ardent fans have to admit…his movies were fun. Come on…Queen doing the theme song for Flash Gordon? Can you say Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell’s Army of Darkness would have been better with a smaller production?
While sci fi fans love low-budget movies, there is a place for those big commercial epics, too.
De Laurentiis’ granddaughter, Giada, is a popular celebrity chef with shows on The Food Network.
I don’t know if I can make this big enough to do justice, but GOOD-BYE, DINO DE LAURENTIIS!
