The Week Ahead: September 6 – September 12 2010
For more information on upcoming (and historical) movies, TV shows, books, conventions, paranormal happenings, and pretty much anything that interests me, see the ever-growing Measured Circle Pop Culture Timeline.
Monday, September 6
On TV: Cartoon Network gives us new Scooby-Doo, Johnny Test, and Adventure time eps; Cartoon Network also debuts the new series, Regular Show, which sounds pretty surreal (the two main characters are a blue jay and a raccoon, but other characters include a gumball machine ((shades of Mystery Science Theater 3000)) and a lollipop-head); the Cartoon Netwrk has another debut: Mad, based on the magazine. This is apparently going to be short animations with pop culture spoofs…the first one looks like it will spoof Avatar and hs a segment called CSICarly (which presumably spoofs CSI and iCarly)
Tuesday, September 7
On TV: it’s the first season finale of It’s Effin’ Science on G4; Syfy has a new ep of Warehouse 13; The Discovery Channel continues its post-apocalyptic reality series, The Colony
Wednesday, September 8
On TV: Syfy gives us a new ep of Ghost Hunters; it’s the 6th season finale of Criss Angel on A&E; we saw this coming…the 5th season finale of Psych on USA; the Science Channel has a new ep of Sci-Fi Science
Thursday, September 9
Cons* starting today include: the 10th Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo at the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream IL (this one benefits a charity, which is nice, and has some big name media guests, including: Richard Kiel (Jaws in the James Bond series); Carroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch); Tanya Roberts; Felix Silla; Caroline Munro; Martine Beswicke; Erin Moran; and Shirley Easton
On TV: The Vampire Diaries is back for its second season on The CW; The CW follows up with the series debut of the reboot of Nikita; we’re back on the hunt with the 4th season return of Destination Truth on Syfy; Syfy gets “kraken” with a new series debut, Beast Legends; WCG Ultimate Gamer also continues on Syfy
Friday, September 10
At the movie theatres: Resident Evil: Afterlife is the fourth movie in the videogame spawned series. This one has some things in its favor: the original star (Milla Jovovich) is back (she’s done all four), and Ali Larter from Heroes returns. It’s also directed (and written) by W.S. Anderson, after Russell Mulcahy’s less commercially successful take with #3. It’s also shot in real 3D, not retroed…they spent some money making this. It’s going to be competing with the second weekend of Machete, but I thin this will beat its predecessors…I’m going to put it in the 80 to 100 million dogro (domestic gross) bucket.
On TV: Disney has a new ep of The Wizards of Waverly Street; Animal Planet begins a three-part series called Blood Dolphins (which I suspect may be difficult to watch); it’s the end of season 4 of Eureka on Syfy; the Travel Channel has two special Ghost Adventures eps; Syfy also has a new Haven; the Kids in the Hall’s Death Comes to Town wraps on IFC
Saturday, September 11
On TV: there’s a new to BBC America ep of Being Human; Celebrity Ghost Stories on Bio include those of Deborah Gibson and Kimberly Locke; Syfy has a TV movie called Mandrake, but it isn’t about the superhero-magician…it’s about a killer plant; it’s also the first season finale of My Ghost Story on Bio
Sunday, September 5
On TV: True Blood puts a stake in its third season on HBO; The Gates continues on ABC; The Venture Brothers are back on Adult Swim on The Cartoon Network
*Cons are short for “conventions”, when people who rarely leave the house get together…just kidding, of course, they can be great fun. For details, I recommend Fanboy’s Convention List.
