Patricia Neal reported dead
Patricia Neal was an actress who exuded a…natural nobility on screen. She wasn’t haughty, but she wasn’t relaxed. There was a certain fragility to her: as if her will was stronger than her body.
In the classic movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still, her character Helen Benson is, in a sense, tasked with proving that humanity is worth something. It isn’t that she needs to have done something extraordinary, or fight a dragon, or anything. She needs to show that humans are good…and few actors could do that without it feeling hokey.
She suffered a debilitating stroke, and yet didn’t seem defeated. She did appear in some other genre works, notably a Kung Fu two-part episode.
While she was nominated for an Oscar for The Subject Was Roses, she won for Hud…two mainstream roles.
For geeks, though, she will always be a reason to hope that aliens might accept our flawed species.
