Gomez and Morticia: best TV parents ever?
I’ve been going back through the Addams Family, starting from the first episode.
The more I see, the more impressed I am with Gomez and Morticia as TV parents.
Yes, they let their kids play with dynamite.
Yes, they keep wild animals.
But, honestly, they know how to do that stuff. At their skill level, playing with dynamite is no more dangerous than putting your kid in football or gymnastics…probably less so.
People used to ask which you preferred: The Munsters or The Addams Family.
I never got that it was even a question…The Addams Family is about a family…they love each other.
That’s one of the things I’m really appreciating. Are there any other TV parents who are still so passionate about each other? Do you see a lot of PDAs (Public Displays of Affection) from Ward and June Cleaver? Not a chance!
Now, you might just think it’s just that Gomez’ thermostat is set a little high, but clearly, Morticia’s no cold fish. 😉
They are really involved in their kids’ lives…and schooling. They call for professional help when they think they need it, and they aren’t always sure what the right answer is…but they try really hard to find it. It worries them when they think they aren’t doing the right thing by Wednesday and Pugsley.
Are there in-law problems? Not at all! Grandmama and Uncle Fester live with them, and any time a relative needs help, they help. They constantly talk about cousins and ancestors…family is clearly very important.
Of course, they also help strangers, and do community work.
Oh, and let’s not forget how well they take care of the pets!
Okay, so they are weirdos…no question. But they are weirdos full of love and with a sense of responsibility.
So you tell me…are Morticia and Gomez the best TV parents ever?
