Jordanian April Fools’ Day joke creates alien invasion fears
Question number one: they have April Fools’ Day in Jordan? 😉
According to this
and several other sources, the Al Ghad newspaper in Jordan ran a front page story on April 1st about UFOs and aliens invading Jafr, a small desert town.
You would think the date would make it obvious, but the Mayor sent out security terms to search. Mayor Mleihan is clearly upset saying that he almost called for an evacuation and children missed school.
People are inevitably linking this to Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast, but that was quite different (and commonly misunderstood).
Welles’ wasn’t trying to hoax anybody: there was a clear announcement that it was a radio play in the beginning, and the realistic part only lasted a fairly short time. After that, it’s being told in the first person by a survivor of the attacks.
You can download it (and other Mercury Theatre broadcasts):
Special note: I usually see the holiday listed as “April Fool’s Day”…which would either imply there is only one fool, or perhaps that they are using it as a verb. I prefer the plural, myself. 🙂
